CHARLES ANTON SMITH

It is with the deepest sadness that the family of Charles Anton Smith, AKA Tony are announcing his sudden and unexpected passing on January 12, 2026.

Tony was born in Washington, D.C- the second son of Paul and Mil Smith. After earning his PhD in physics from the University of Rochester, New York, he moved to Winnipeg to work at The University of Manitoba.

He and his wife Susan retired early so they could spend more time at their cottage at Malachi, On. and travelling.

Tony was so knowledgeable and passionate about minerals and was very active in the mineral club. He amassed a beautiful and carefully curated collection and was always happy to showcase it to anyone who showed an interest.

Tony loved being in nature and became an avid and accomplished nature photographer. He spent many hours taking photos both at Malachi and Fort Whyte and his photos often graced the Malachi calendars.

Left to cherish his memory are Susan, her daughter Allison, sister-in-law, Pat and her son Victor and the many people whose lives he touched with his infinite kindness and knowledge.

A special thanks to Allan and Margaret and Tom and Janet for their friendship, shared good times and support.

Tony was cremated and a private service will be held at a later date.
